The Reemergence of Hemp in Japan

During my recent trip to Japan, I made an exciting discovery: CBD!

Finding CBD here was new to me, as it wasn’t available during my visits in 2018 and 2019. But in 2024, you can now find CBD drinks, gummies, and vape products in Japan.

Could this mark the reemergence of hemp in Japanese culture?

Since the 1940s, Japan has had strict cannabis prohibition, with severe punishments for possession or consumption. However, recent years have seen a shift. There’s a growing movement to open Japan’s CBD market, driven by both business and medical interests. CBD and cannabinoid education companies are also making their mark in Japan.

Now for my favorite part - the historical perspective:

My personal study of cannabis and hemp has revealed a rich history of hemp in Japan. For example, hemp seeds were a key ingredient in the traditional shichimi 7-flavor spice. Additionally, the beautiful Japanese star pattern (pictured in slides 4 & 5) is a traditional Japanese print representing the hemp plant, called “asa-no-ha,” asa meaning hemp and ha meaning leaves. This pattern remains popular in Japanese textiles today, and I love spotting it throughout Japan!

It’s heartening to see evolving policies allowing people in Japan to reconnect with this bountiful plant. History is not just in the past; it’s also in the present. I’m excited to explore more about CBD in Japan on future visits!

Note of caution: THC-rich cannabis is still illegal in Japan. As you travel and explore, always be cautious and stay informed about the laws. That said, let’s watch this evolving global landscape - together!

I’d love to know: Did this post interest you or teach you something new? Stay tuned for more holistic wellness insights and culture!
