What is a Cannabis Coach?

After going through a course hosted by The Cannabis Coaching Institute, I have decided to become a cannabis coach. I am so excited for this new chapter of my cannabis journey. This path will help to inform my writing, expand my business offerings, and allow me to help more people discover healing through cannabis.

Cannabis coaches help their clients to transform their health through the medicinal properties of cannabis.

Upon sharing this new career endeavor with some of my colleagues in the cannabis space, I was asked the question, “what is a cannabis coach?” This is a new and exciting occupation within the industry, and so many people aren’t sure what cannabis coaches do, exactly. My goal is to tell you with this blog post!

So, what is a cannabis coach? Who are they, what do they do, and who do they serve? Let’s get into it.

Who Are Cannabis Coaches?

Cannabis coaches are individuals who serve clients by 1) providing education about intentional cannabis use and 2) supporting clients as they incorporate cannabis wellness into their lives.

Cannabis coaches are usually individuals who are passionate about the healing capabilities of cannabis, and many cannabis coaches have even healed themselves in some capacity using cannabis therapy. Cannabis coaches either own their own practices or work for a company that provides cannabis coaching services.

What Do Cannabis Coaches Do?

Cannabis coaches do many things to serve the needs of their clients. First of all, cannabis coaches help clients to outline key health goals that they would like to address through intentional cannabis use. Secondly, cannabis coaches provide clients with relevant cannabis science, as well as key information about the endocannabinoid system, to enable clients to strengthen their internal endocannabinoid tone and support the body’s internal balancing system.

Cannabis coaches will also help clients navigate the array of cannabis product options and administration methods to identify the best approach for them. Additionally, cannabis coaches serve as a support system as clients step through self-titration and encourage accountability through regular check-ins and other time management and mindset tools.

Who Do Cannabis Coaches Serve?

Cannabis coaches serve a wide array of clients. Essentially, cannabis coaches can serve anyone who has a health gap that can be addressed through intentional cannabis use. And the thing about cannabis is that it can support people suffering from a multitude of different ailments.

Cannabis is certainly not a panacea, but it does offer relief for many disparate health conditions. While this might sound “too good to be true”, there is a scientific reason why cannabis can make a difference in so many health situations. Essentially, many illnesses are resultant from an imbalance in endocannabinoid tone, or the levels of endocannabinoid molecules that exist in our bodies. When our bodies have a healthy level of endocannabinoids available, the body is able to self-regulate and heal itself when presented with stressors or injury. However, when the body’s endocannabinoid tone is “off”, which can be caused through nutritional deficiencies, chronic stress, or even too much alcohol consumption, the body develops a resultant disease. Diseases caused by the lack of endocannabinoids in the body are called “clinical endocannabinoid deficiencies” (CECD), and include many conditions that you have likely heard of, including migraines, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, Alzheimer’s, and anxiety.

For more on CECD check out this report summarizing Dr. Ethan Russo’s work on CECD: Clinical endocannabinoid deficiency (CECD) revisited

Because cannabis can be used to treat so many different ailments, cannabis coaches support all kinds of client journeys. Most cannabis coaches will narrow their focus so they can specialize and gain knowledge specific to one health area. For example, one cannabis coach might focus on helping clients manage their weight while another specializes in helping clients who are living with chronic pain. Others still study the immune system and its relation to endocannabinoid health to treat clients with autoimmune or inflammation-based diseases.

While modern cannabis coaching is considered a relatively novel career path, I would like to acknowledge that cannabis healing is actually a very old endeavor. Anyone throughout history who has healed others through cannabis medicine was a cannabis coach in their own right. Cannabis has been used medicinally for millennia, and so this calling is nothing new. Either way, I’m proud to be following in other cannabis healer’s footsteps.

Why Cannabis Coaching?

Prior to becoming a cannabis coach, I served as Operations Manager and budtender for a cannabis store in Washington State. In this role, I found that many customers had big questions that are not well addressed over the retail counter, such as “How can I use cannabis to overcome my chronic pain for good?” or “How can I use cannabis to improve my quality of life?”

I realized there was a demand for cannabis care that exists between the retail market and the doctor’s office. And this is where cannabis coaching comes in. I now hold space for longer-term client relationships where I can get to know my client, understand their unique needs, and leverage my knowledge and experience to guide their cannabis journey.
